Gaius (Caligula), 37-41. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 34 mm, 26.00 g, 7 h), Rome, 37-38. C•CAESAR•AVG•GERMANICVS•P•M•TR•POT• / PIETAS Pietas, veiled, seated left, holding patera in her right hand and leaning left on small draped figure standing on basis. Rev. DIVO - AVG / S - C Gaius, veiled and togate, standing front, head to left, holding patera over garlanded altar on which a bull is about to be sacrificed; to left, victimarius standing front, head to right, holding bull by the neck; to right, attendant standing front, head to left, holding patera in his left hand; in the back, garlanded hexastyle Temple of Divus Augustus with statues atop, decorated pediment and Corinthian capitals. BMC 41. Cohen 9. RIC 36. A beautiful example of this impressive issue with attractive river surfaces. Minor corrosion and with a flan crack, otherwise, very fine.

From an old Swiss collection, privately acquired from Schweizerische Kreditanstalt Monetarium in the late 1970s or early 1980s (with original dealer's ticket).
